Goodnight Scholars Program
Investing in North Carolina’s STEM Future

Established 2008
The Goodnight Scholars Program invests in students from low- and middle-income families in North Carolina studying in STEM or STEM education disciplines.
This investment represents a commitment to our students’ personal, professional, and academic development through scholarship funding, comprehensive programming, and enrichment opportunities. The Program empowers Goodnight Scholars to “pay it forward” as transformational leaders at NC State University, in North Carolina, and in the world.
Looking Back & Looking Forward

Allison Medlin
Director of the Goodnight Scholars Program, NC State University
As our 11th year drew to a close, the transformation of our Program was on display at our annual Goodnight Graduation Gala. This was a milestone moment for the event as it was the first-ever to be held in historic Reynolds Coliseum. Back in 2012, the inaugural Goodnight Graduation Gala was a small affair. There were less than 25 graduates recognized and our entire community fit comfortably in the Park Alumni Center. Seven years later, it took an arena to accommodate us! It was heartening to look around Reynolds, transformed for a magnificent celebration, and reflect on how the Program has expanded and evolved into such a brilliant community.
Much of our evolution was experienced first-hand by the Class of 2019. As high school seniors, they were the first cohort to participate in an interview day as part of our expanded selection process. They were also the first class to enroll in our first-year seminar: GSP 250. Their tenure saw the introduction of many Program staples including our senior retreat, North Carolina: Mountains to Coast and Mayventure: Vancouver trips, new student leadership roles such as ambassadors and STEM coaches, our professional mentorship program and, most importantly, the expansion to include transfer scholars. In fact, Richard Trevorrow became the first transfer scholar to graduate this past May, completing his degree in just two years!
Looking deeper, the Program has transformed in other important ways since the Class of 2019 arrived on-campus. Our Program has become more inclusive as we serve greater numbers of low-income, first-generation, minority and rural students. Since 2015, non-white students have increased from 20% to 45% of our scholar population. 42% of our scholars are from rural counties and 30% are first generation college students. We are also enrolling scholars in previously underrepresented majors. For example, education majors now make up 10% of our community, compared to 3% in 2015. At the same time, persistence in our Program and degree completion is at an all-time high at 98%.
This transformation was supported by a variety of deliberate strategies aimed to increase diversity and support student success. For our selection process, we have taken steps to address bias, broaden our definition of merit, and expand outreach. Simultaneously, we have strived to create an inclusive, supportive community and design a program that meets our students’ changing needs. With 11 years of learning and growth, and the incredible support and vision of Jim and Ann Goodnight, we are certain that we have developed a model for scholarship programs in the 21st century.
Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome our largest class of new scholars this fall with 50 incoming first-year scholars and 20 incoming transfer scholars. We will continue to make changes to better serve student needs by redeveloping GSP 250, adding new student programs and travel opportunities and improving our new student onboarding process. Regardless of how the Program changes over the next four years, we are confident that our newest scholars will benefit from a transformational experience and supportive community.
Our Scholars

A Vision for Student Success
We are a comprehensive student development program filled with 245 high-achieving first-year and transfer students along with a team of dedicated professional staff members.
No Goodnight Scholar is the same. One may love human biology and have an obsession with peanut butter M&Ms. Another may lie awake at night dreaming of revolutionizing computer technology while agonizing over a missed goal from last night’s intramural soccer championship. Diversity in thought, experiences, and passions is arguably their greatest contribution to the Goodnight Scholars community. Why do we value it so much? Because a diverse community of North Carolinians, unified by a single purpose, creates a learning environment that celebrates new perspectives and differences.

Mentorship
If NC State was a city, the student population alone would make it the 42nd most populous city in North Carolina. Crazy, right? Now imagine growing up in a small town where adding 100 new residents is considered a population explosion and, all of a sudden, you find yourself on a campus where people are outnumbered only by bricks. Transitioning to college is not a simple journey, which is why our community puts tremendous emphasis on peer mentorship. After all, the journey is a lot smoother with a friend by your side.
Mentorship in the Goodnight Scholars Program extends beyond the initial transition to college. Sophomore and junior Goodnight Scholars seeking professional guidance are enrolled in the Goodnight Fellows Program, connecting them with talented industry leaders and NC State faculty who can put these scholars on a path for career development and achievement. After all, while the journey is a lot smoother with a friend by your side, it is as smooth as silk with someone by your side who has done the journey before.

Enrichment Grants
Goodnight Scholars have dreams. We want to fund them! Transformative opportunities outside of the classroom can enhance a scholar’s college experience whether they are sticking their feet in the sand on the shores of Cyprus or backpacking along the rugged trails of Iceland’s tallest mountains. The feeling of independence and challenge of living in a new culture become pinnacle moments where scholars learn new skills and create lifelong friendships. Our responsibility is to ensure that financial restrictions do not become a barrier for personal growth.
Do not be fooled: Receiving a Goodnight Scholars Program enrichment grant takes time and preparation. Goodnight Scholars are required to complete an online proposal by submitting an itemized budget, agenda, and learning objectives. Goodnight Scholars then interview with a professional staff member, discussing how the proposed enrichment opportunities ties into their personal, academic and/or professional goals. But once the interview is over and that “Congratulations!” email arrives, the hard work becomes worth it and the only stress remaining is figuring out what to pack.

Programming

Enriching and Meaningful Programming
We have a lofty goal of supporting our scholars’ personal, professional, and academic development. That is not a goal you take on alone.
Fortunately, both NC State and the Triangle are home to a dizzying number of accomplished faculty and talented professionals who share our motivation for student development. These folks are the foundation for the success of our weekly programming, enabling us to expose our scholars to modern trends in academia and industry.
Goodnight Scholars also play a role in the development of their peers. Whether they are breaking a sweat while building a home for Habitat for Humanity or working on their cores during a community social at Cirque de Vol, scholars are forming new relationships and swapping stories about their unique backgrounds. Like the old adage goes, it takes a village.

Travel

North Carolina is a spectacular place to call home. Majestic mountains, scenic coastlines and thriving cities all within our state border.
Why leave?
Like the late Anthony Bourdain once said, “It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.”
Our four main excursions expose Goodnight Scholars to the diversity of thought and cultures in our state, our country, and our world. Road tripping across North Carolina and teaching science to middle school students connects Goodnight Scholars with the next generation of talented North Carolinians. Walking amongst the skyscrapers of Boston and Vancouver shows how history and innovation come together for societal prosperity. Standing mesmerized at the lush Trinidad & Tobago rainforests incites a better appreciation for Mother Nature’s complexity. All of these moments are essential to the development of our Goodnight Scholars, advancing their understanding of our intricate, globally-connected world.
Outreach

Our motto for outreach is pretty simple:
Let’s make a connection.
Whether presenting in a crowded auditorium filled with talented community college students and administrators or answering questions one-on-one with a shy, STEM-loving high school student, we want to see a spark in the eyes of our audience. By sharing our story, we hope prospective students see themselves not just as Goodnight Scholars, but as members of the NC State Wolfpack. This goal is what motivates us to hop in our cars and travel from Murphy to Manteo in search of amazing students from humble beginnings who dream of contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Alumni

Allow us to indulge in a brief humble brag:
We have awesome alumni!
With the graduating Class of 2019 donning their cap and gowns in May, our alumni network expanded to 323 accomplished scholars who are taking the “pay it forward” attitude into industry and the classroom. Take a road trip around the United States and there is a good chance you will bump into any one of our alumni who call 31 different states home. Or rack up those precious airmiles and visit our alumni living in four countries including Egypt and Ghana.
No matter where our alumni now call home, they are doing work that impacts people like you. They are teaching the next generation of STEM talent in rural elementary schools, improving transportation infrastructure, and researching new methods of agriculture. They are clocking in at industry powerhouses like Microsoft and IBM and pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams around the globe. Best of all, our alumni are bringing their professional wisdom back to the Goodnight Scholars community, serving as mentors for current scholars and participating in annual events like Finalist Interview Day and Scholar2Scholar.
The desire to give back is not only why we believe they are awesome, but why we are proud to call them Goodnight Scholars Alumni.
